Measuring A Room For New Flooring

We’ve helped thousands of Central Florida residents get beautiful floors.

The total price of your floor is of course dependent on how much flooring you need. Getting an accurate measurement is not as easy as it seems.

First, (and remember we work with A LOT of homeowners) you must have a tape measure that measures in feet and inches. Many of the new sonar type devices only measure in feet and decimals.

As you enter the room start at the left wall of the room and anchor your tape measure or have a partner hold it flush against the wall.

Walk straight across the room to the opposite wall. Write down the measurement in feet and inches as indicated on tape measure. Add two inches.

Follow the same procedure from the back wall to the front wall. Again add two inches. These extra inches allow for whole units in the the type of floor, for example tile floors are purchased in whole tiles.

If there are closets that recede from the room, follow the same procedure as above.

Do not forget to measure into the doorway as well.

Most professional flooring companies will a 8-10% added to your final measurements for a “waste” factor for cuts, etc., but be careful, this is where many unscrupulous flooring companies “pad” the waste to increase the sale.

Reputable Flooring Companies

Remember that most reputable companies like Floors Direct will confirm your measurements by sending a certified, licensed professional installer to accurately diagram the area to be covered as well as make note of any irregularities in the room layout to do a perfect measurement.

If you find that a flooring company simply takes your measurement and adds 25% for an “overage factor” it is time to get suspicious about that company.
